Sensory Play: Remember Gak?

Do you remember Gak?  It was that slimy stuff they sold back in the day.  Who knew that a little cornstarch, water, and food coloring could make something pretty similar?

Let me begin by saying, yes, this is MESSY.

However, not quite as messy as I thought.

It peels right off of the table and comes off of hands super easy.  Well, except for the food coloring I used.  Hopefully Bumble enjoys having purple fingers for a few days.

I have been pulling ideas from The Toddler's Busy Book and we have been having a great time.  I don't know about you, but I just run out of ideas and I get tempted to just let the girls watch Disney Junior for hours.  This has happened.  I won't lie.  This book has helped though and we had a blast making a mess.

Bumble was not so sure about getting her hands "all messy".  She is the girliest thing ever, but once I got my hands in it and showed her she ended up playing in it for hours.  She was fascinated with how it felt like a solid and then when she lifted her hands it would slime between her fingers to become a liquid.

I was pretty fascinated by it too :)

Cornstarch, Water, Food Coloring, and a Bowl

We put the cornstarch in a bowl.  I didn't go by exact amounts.  We just mixed the water with the cornstarch until we got a slimy consistency.

Bumble stirred...Hoot watched...and ate Cheerios...what else?

We started off with pink coloring...Bumble's choice.

Then we got a little crazy and added orange.

Then blue...

Which ended up making purple...

It was slimy coming down, but more of a solid in the bowl.

It was pretty cool once we poured it out on the placemat.  It peeled up and then would slide back together.

Here's the book I mentioned earlier:

What Will I Do with a Girl?!

With my first pregnancy, at 12 weeks pregnant we were told we were having a boy.  We were pumped.  Growing up, I was a tomboy, and having a boy just seemed to fit.  I have always been completely turned off to dolls, dress-up, and pretty much all things little girl.  We bought boy bedding. We made plans for the bedroom.  Jungle theme or sports?  We conjured up dreams of watching him play football and baseball.  We picked potential names.  Fast forward six weeks.  Our 18 week sonogram showed that something had seemed to disappear and there we were, staring at the screen, realizing that our dreams of a star football player were rapidly dissolving.  My first question to my husband was, “Are you disappointed?”  As if I needed to ask.  The feelings of shock and surprise was palpable.  What would we do with a girl?  I saw tea parties, dolls, and heaven forbid pink in my future.

Now, the little girl we saw on the sonogram that day is three years old and all girl.  At six months she was putting all of the stacker rings on her arms, using them as bracelets.  Forget stacking them.  At fifteen months she started walking and everyone commented on her “swish” as she walked, hands out, and on her toes like a ballerina.  If a movie had a song and dancing, even if it was forty years old and in black and white, she was in it, soaking in every word.  Waking up singing songs from “Hello Dolly!” and “Meet Me in St. Louis” is the norm in our household.

I knew the minute I saw the commercial for Disney on Ice it was an absolute must.  The girl honestly lives in a continuous bubble of fairy tales and musicals.  What could be better than life size Rapunzel and Minnie skating around on ice while singing?  That about tops the list in her world.  I decided to let her pick out a Disney princess dress to wear and she chose Merida’s dress from Brave.  After asking to wear it all week her big night finally came.  I put it on her, as she grinned ear to ear from pure excitement, placed her “golden slippers” on her feet, and did her hair.  She was bouncing off the walls, literally.

I had watched the weather and they had been forecasting rain all week.  However, it really had not happened so I was not too worried.  Well, in Texas, the weather can change in an instant and that is just what happened.  Seventy degrees and sunny for one day and forty five degrees and rain the next.  Our sky lights started buzzing from the wind and I could hear the rain coming down with a fury, pretty much in complete contrast to the mood of my little girl.  So, out we went, umbrella in hand, and golden slippers on.

When it is raining and we are stuck in Dallas traffic on I-30 I am not overly thrilled.  Impatient drivers, weaving in an out of traffic, trying to get home and watching ambulance lights as they assist people in a car accident is not my idea of fun.  I sat in the passengers seat, somewhat tensely, as we drove through the traffic and the rain continued to pour down.  I glanced behind me and looked at the little princess in the back seat, who was smiling like crazy, looking out of the window.

“Mom, isn’t it beautiful?  It’s a beautiful day!  Look!  Look!”, she said excitedly as she pointed outside.

I paused from my frustration and looked outside.  She saw the lights by the ferris wheel at Fair Park.  She saw all of the water as it dripped down her window.  She saw how the yellow headlights and red brake lights filled each drop with glowing color.

Suddenly, the rain, the cold weather, it wasn’t so bad.  It was beautiful.

Even, when we arrived, my husband was holding her underneath the umbrella and I am crammed underneath it too, teeth chattering.  I looked up at her and she was still smiling, talking about seeing Mickey, Belle, and Rapunzel.  She looked at the American Airlines Center, amazed at “the big building”.  During the show, she stood up on my husband’s lap, arms completely extended, eyes closed (praise and worship style) completely living in the moment.

Before I had her I thought, “What am I going to do with a girl?”.  I will tell you.

I would learn that beauty can be found even in the rainy days and traffic.  I have found that I need to slow down and instead of always projecting to the next moment I need to live in this moment.  When I fill myself up with joy there is no room for fear, doubt, and frustration, but instead time for dress-up and tea parties.

As I sat in the car, on the way there, I looked at the rain streaming down the windshield. I tried to see what she saw so clearly and so quickly.  She saw a myriad of colors.  She saw God’s masterpiece at work.  She saw true beauty.

We need to take a moment to slow down, take it all in, and look at life through the eyes of an innocent, ecstatic child, on their way to Disney on Ice.

“Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven.  And whoever welcomes a little child like this in my name welcomes me.”
Matthew 18:4-5

Hanging Around: Wreaths

By now, unless you have been living under a rock (and even then I don't know), you have definitely seen the millions of different wreaths people are making.  I have seen burlap, yarn, deco mesh, garland, balloons, coffee filters, ribbons, and pretty much anything you can stick on a ring.  They are just fun to make.

However, once your masterpiece is complete what now?

We are temporarily living in an apartment after recently moving and to be quite honest I was afraid someone might steal my wreath off of my front door.

Yes, it is THAT exquisite.

Ha.  Not really, but after the time and money I spent on it I didn't want some middle school kid to think it would be funny to take off with my wreath.  I just knew I would find it out by the dumpster.  So, I ended up hanging it on the inside of my door.  However, I soon found out that when I used my TRX bands I ended up smashing it as I worked out.  Even though my working out lasted all of one week I decided to move it.

We bought an inexpensive curtain rod at Target and placed it on our dining room wall (which is really in our living room...oh and our kitchen...apartment life).  I had extra burlap that I twisted around the curtain rod and here you go.  Another place to hang your wreath.

Here is a little wreath inspiration for you:

Adorable Fall wreath, hanging on the door, from The Ruffled Stitch.  I love the lettering on the burlap flags!

These wreaths made by The Rustic Pig are gorgeous, especially with these deep red doors!  This porch screams Fall!

I love this whole arrangement by Ashley at Cherished Bliss.  Maybe I have just missed it, but I have not seen a popcorn kernel wreath and I'm loving it.  When I ventured into canning a few months ago I came across these aqua Mason jars.  I knew I wanted to do something with them because they are just so unique.  This is a great way to use them.

My favorite thing about this arrangement is the white mantle, vases, and mirror with the rustic, wooden elements, and pops of fall colors.  Not to mention the hanging "Fall" banner.  Just perfectly put together by The Frugal Homemaker.

Ahhh I just love Fall.  The weather, the COLORS, and just what Fall ushers in with all of the upcoming holidays, not to mention food!

What's for Dinner?!: The Fresh 20

I don't know how many times I have heard a Mom (myself included) say, "I have no idea what I am going to cook tonight."  You want to cook something creative, healthy, AND yummy, but there are those nights when you are just out of ideas or just plain out of time.

Chicken again?!
Spaghetti, really?
Or better yet...
You pull out the peanut butter and jelly, slap it on some wheat bread, and throw in the towel.

Last year I came across a great meal planning service called The Fresh 20.  I had tried Emeals, before they had the clean eating meal plans, and I liked it.  However, many of the ingredients were processed and this time around that is not what I was looking for.  Now, Emeals apparently offers more plans that offer healthier eating options, but I haven't tried it again, especially after being introduced to The Fresh 20.

The following is from the Fresh 20 website:
"Everyone wants a quick solution, but I just was not willing to serve mushroom soup casseroles or refrigerator dough to my growing family.  I wasn't looking for fast and simple.  I was looking for FRESH and simple.  The Fresh 20 is an alternative to food as products.  It's about buying less and making more.  It's about loading your dinner with delicious, preservative free food.  It's about saving that takeout money for something more rewarding than takeout!"

Each week I am given a new menu for the following week, complete with a grocery list, including estimated cost and nutrition facts (believe me, it's all healthy stuff!).  The list consists of 20 fresh, seasonal ingredients per week.  Absolutely nothing on your list will be frozen or processed.  I love how all of the menu items work together.  I am the QUEEN of getting carried away at the grocery store, buying too much of something, and it going bad before I ever get around to throwing it in the oven.  I hate wasting food and with this plan it ALL goes to use.  I also love how it gives you a prep guide.  You do the prep for each meal when you have an hour or so free.  I usually will do this after church on a Sunday afternoon.  You chop up your veggies, cook your pasta (depending on the recipe), and make the marinades.  Then, when the night comes to make your meal you pretty much just throw it all together and toss it in the oven or in the skillet.  BAM!  Now you have a home-cooked meal at just a fraction of the cost you would have spent eating out and more than likely much healthier as well! Not to mention all of the stress of planning and worrying what to cook is now a problem of the past.

Here's a sample of what's cooking in our kitchen this week thanks to the The Fresh 20.

Monday:  Orange Pork Tenderloin w'/ Mashed Chipotle Sweet Potatoes & Grilled Zucchini
Tuesday: Macadamia Mahi Mahi with Garlic Tomato Orzo
Wednesday:  Apricot Chipotle Chicken Drumsticks with Spinach Stuffed Portobellos
Thursday:  Rosemary Pork Panini
Friday:  Sweet Potato Cakes and Endive Salad

Most of the time I flip some of these meals to the weekend, or even to the next week, depending on what we have going on.  Some nights we just eat the leftovers!

Oh, and I forgot to mention, they have many different meal plans depending on your diet or family size.
Options include:  Classic, Vegetarian, Gluten-free, Dairy-free, Kosher, For One, and Lunch.
Membership is $6 a month for most plans, unless you sign up for a year in which you receive a discount.

Planning ahead, when it comes to cooking, has helped our family to eat healthier (making us feel better), stress less, and even save a little money in the process.
Eating healthy doesn't have to break the bank.

Just a little food for thought :)
